Saxophonist and flutist John Alexander is a jazz composer and performer who appears regularly at the Double Door Inn, Blue Restaurant and Bar, and at other public and private venues in Charlotte and the surrounding area. He is a member of and contributing composer and arranger to the Charlotte Jazz Orchestra, and is President of the Charlotte Jazz Society. In early 2001 he began an association with the St. Stephens A.M.E. Zion Church at Unity Place in Gastonia, where he participates in Sunday morning services, performs with the Cassell Singers and works with young instrumentalists in the church.
Alexander is the recipient of several grants from Charlotte’s Arts and Sciences Council including two Regional Artist Grants. Through the Charlotte Jazz Society he organized and manages “Jazz Goes to School”, a grant supported program that places professional jazz musicians in the classrooms of several middle and high school jazz bands in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school system. Also through the Society he helps to organize and produce the “Charlotte Jazz Society’s Student Jazz Festival: Where the Cool Kids Come to Play” in the spring or every year.
A graduate of the University of Miami with a Master of Music degree in jazz pedagogy, he teaches instrumental music and jazz improvisation at schools in Mecklenburg, Iredell, and Cleveland Counties in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina.
